Have a great idea for a film, but not sure how to get started? This course will introduce you to what you need to know to begin your journey into screenwriting. 

Through the study of mentor texts, you will examine screenplay structure and formatting, as well as the do's and don'ts of screenwriting.  You will be introduced to tool to get you started on your screenwriting journey including software options, screenplay databases, and resources for writing.

Students will have an opportunity to practice writing various scenarios and will leave with at least one complete scene. 

The Art of Storytelling

Whether it's a short story, novel, film, or TV series, all stories begin with the same essential elements.  This course will familiarize students with these elements and discuss how each contributes to the artful construction of a fully developed story.  
 
Through the study of mentor texts, students will explore how professional writers weave together character relationships and motivations, settings, and critical plot elements throughout a three act structure in order to create the world of their story and communicate a focused theme. Students will then have an opportunity to practice integrating these elements into their own story idea.
Epic Storytelling

What do Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, and Wizard of Oz all have in common? All of these beloved stories take us through The Hero's Journey as described by Joseph Campbell in his book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. 

Through this workshop, students will learn about the 12 stages of The Hero's Journey and examine how they are used in developing epic stories. Through the study of mentor texts, students will explore how common character archetypes and key events enhance the story and propel the hero onward through their journey. Students will then have an opportunity to incorporate elements of The Hero's Journey into their own epic story ideas.
